COVID-19 Stay-at-home Virtual Shoots

Nothing feels normal nowadays.

I think about the end of 2019, when hope was such a strong presence, bubbling under the surface of anticipation for the upcoming year. A new decade, a year called “2020” would only HAVE to be good, right?

I remember New Year’s Resolution posts. Wishes for better circumstances, notes to selves to remember to be kind and healthier.

Yet only a few months after the turn of the year, did the world crumble, imploding into itself. Over something so microscopic. And I won’t turn this post into a Debby Downer, but I do want to remind myself when I come back to this months – years – decades from now, to recognize how quickly things change and fall out of control. Even with the best intentions.

So since the stay-at-home order was implemented, I wanted to try to be at least a bit creative. I saw a few photographers advertise a “Virtual Photoshoot” concept that piqued my interest. It seemed fun and safe, something anyone could participate in as long as they had a phone with a camera.

And even though the photos turned out more pixelated than I expected and the lighting wasn’t perfect, guess what?? I fulfilled a purpose of getting creative! And I was able to gift my friends some cute photos to add to their memories.

Those bigger, deeper reasons outweighed all my photography-technical woes. Virtual Photoshoots may not be for everyone, but they definitely made my soul happier.

Which – especially during this time – is really the best thing I could ask for.

Lesego + Mike reached out to me to do their photos, set out on their apartment lanai (for those of you non-Hawaii locals, “lanai” refers to a patio essentially). They strung some cute fairy lights and brought out their house plants to add some life to the overwhelming beige.

Vanessa + Nate invited me into their living room virtually to capture some sweet moments with their two boys and dogs. I love their lil “Be Humble & Kind” sign that hangs above the couch. It’s a cozy reminder of what family really looks like.
